About This Project

Project name: Queen Street
Location: Glasgow
Sector: Network Rail   / Transportation
Installer: Curtis Moore
Main Contractor: Balfour Beatty
Architect: BPD Architecture

Queen Street, Glasgow

3,500/m2 of Aluminium J57S Grade Anodised in Regency Gold 3 has been used in Glasgow’s Queen Street Station; a station expected to see a 40% increase in users by 2030.

The Optima Through Fixed Cassette (TFC) rainscreen cladding system was selected for the large-scale renovation project as it is perfectly suited to soffit applications with mechanical fixings in the panel recesses.

Whilst being the most economical rainscreen solution, requiring discreet fixings in the panel recess, the system retains the benefits of a drained and ventilated façade. Superior manufacturing techniques ensure there is no build-up of metal thicknesses at the cruciform joint, leaving an even and pristine appearance across every panel.

The panels, which were anodised in Regency Gold 3 to provide a hard wearing, long lasting finish, have a bright and modern look.

Every project undertaken by the expert cladding manufacturers, Sotech, has unique requirements. For the internal soffits required at Glasgow’s Queen Street Station the team at Sotech were challenged to create bespoke light boxes to allow the down light to be recessed back from the cladding itself. The bespoke light boxes required a lot of fabrication work by our expert in house welders and assembly teams, due to the required geometry of each part.

Anodising accentuates the finish of raw aluminium, meaning any welding and dressing would normally be visible. However, due to Sotech’s strong relationships with paint manufacturers, the team was able to secure a colour match which blends perfectly against the full extent of the façade. Sotech used a powder coat colour matched to the Anodised Gold 3 finish to provide a cleaner final aesthetic.

Jamie Smith SotechJamie Smith, Estimator said: “The colour match between the Anodising and PPC is fantastic and the transition from the external soffit to internal provides continuity. We are really pleased with the final look of this project. It is great to see it completed as it was first project manufactured through our brand new Salvagnini Panel Bending machine, procured in 2020. The sheer scale of the project showcases our abilities to deliver on large projects to exceptional standards. This is a very striking project, aesthetically pleasing to the eye. A very strong design and installation by Curtis Moore.”

The work on Queen Street Railway Station in Glasgow was completed as part of a larger scale regeneration project, bringing extended platforms to accommodate longer trains, fully accessible entrances on Dundas Street and George Square, an expanded concourse and new station facilities.

IN FOCUS: BENEFITS OF THE ANODISING

Anodising is an electrolytic passivation process used to increase the thickness of the natural oxide layer on the surface of metal parts.

  • Due to the nature of the anodising process and the tight quality controls on both the aluminium and the surface treatment, anodising has a homogeneous (matching & consistent) appearance.
  • Colours, textures and patterns can be incorporated in the anodic film, enhancing the natural metallic appearance without affecting the total UV resistance of the rainscreen cladding.
  • Anodising enhances the natural qualities of aluminium further; it permits a strongly contemporary finish with incomparable corrosion and abrasion resistance.
  • Aluminium is exceptionally recyclable, requires minimal maintenance and has proven lifetime performance.
