800sqm of Optima FC in 3mm J57S Up aluminium, anodised by United Anodisers in UnAcol™ UA130-1, UA140-2, Anolok II ™ B711,B713,B715, was specified for 40 Percival Street in London.
A residential development owned by The Guinness Partnership, 40 Percival Street is an unusual reclad project. Residents were moved to alternative accommodation while the installation of the replacement aluminium panels was completed, and the seven-storey building was stripped back to its structural frame.
Amongst the challenges was the movement in the frame, which had to be accommodated in the cladding design, as the rainscreen panels straddle the floor levels.
The panels, which are A1 rated, were fitted in staggered layers and the colours were not uniform, as per the original design intent of the architect. Due to the sloping roof of the building the panels at the top had to be raked to follow the same slope.
FEA testing was carried out for this project. Mohammadreza (Mo) Jenaban, Principal Technical Engineer at Sotech, ran multiple reports, reducing centres from 500 fixing centres to 400 due to wind load.
Sotech worked closely with installer A20 to complete the project, providing scheduling advice, supplying multiple samples of colours and scheduling the job on macros, to ensure a smooth production workflow.
Three years on from initial installation (which was completed in 2020), the finish on this project stills hold its vibrant colours. An anodised aluminium surface is so robust that it offers superior scratch and abrasion resistance, and there is no risk of adhesion failure such as peeling, blistering, cracking, splitting or chipping. It’s a striking project, with a bold finish.
