1300m2 of Optima XPC in extruded aluminium 6063 T6 Grade has been used in the completion of The Spark commercial office space in Newcastle.
Optima XPC, an aluminium extrusion plank rainscreen system with a flat face, was chosen because it provides a consistent module joint with high impact resistance and flatness.
In order to meet the architects unique design, the Sotech team had to modify the standard profile range and provide a bespoke module. An amendment to XPC200 reduced the overall face cover area to a new die – XPC190.
Both the new die XPC190 and the existing XPC200 can safely interlock together, helping the detailing in this complex format. Fabricated corner planks, often formed from two sections of extrusion, also had to be created for each castellation making it a fabrication intensive build.
The Spark has been built to support new and existing businesses looking for an inspiring working environment. The BREEAM Excellent building is arranged over 12 floors and includes occupancy accommodation and large, open collaboration spaces.
Optima XPC has set flat face modules of 150mm, 190mm. 200mm, 225mm, and 250mm as well as a 150mm module castellated extruded aluminium plank rainscreen.
This product can be used as a weathered screen, introducing ventilation at the base of a wall and at the top. Some ventilation can be introduced at the cross-plank joints by leaving a gap with the support structure behind creating a baffle.
