Optima TFC+ and Optima IPC (used exclusively for soffits) in 3.0mm and 2.0mm Aluminium J57S Up have been used in the design of Nottingham Trent University’s Art and Design Building. The UA Regency Gold 2 finish delivers a refined, sophisticated aesthetic that interacts dynamically with natural light, enhancing the building’s bold visual identity.
Nottingham Trent University’s new Art and Design Building is a visually striking addition to the city’s landscape. Designed by Hawkins/Brown and constructed by Bowmer and Kirkland, this dynamic educational facility serves as a hub for creative disciplines, blending form, function, and sustainability. The building’s distinctive façade, featuring two bold beacons on the north and south elevations, exemplifies contemporary design while adhering to the highest safety and performance standards.
The defining features of the project – the north and south beacons – presented complex design challenges. These intricate elements required a façade solution capable of accommodating precise panel shapes and seamlessly integrating with the building’s structural steelwork. Optima TFC+ was selected for its superior flexibility, allowing for efficient on-site installation while maintaining the architect’s vision.
To ensure the panels could withstand environmental forces and meet performance requirements, Sotech conducted Finite Element Analysis (FEA) on the design. This allowed for accurate modelling of the beacons’ unique geometries, assessment of potential stress points, and optimisation of panel designs. This proactive approach ensured that the façade not only met aesthetic requirements but also adhered to stringent safety and performance standards.
Key to the project’s success was the close collaboration between Sotech, Keyclad, and the design team. Sotech’s Project Engineer Tony Rhodes worked directly with Keyclad’s specialists to refine panel sizes, consider the best method of installation, and work through the integration challenges with the steel framework. This hands-on approach enabled a smooth installation process and ensured the finished façade met both aesthetic and structural expectations.
Testimonials:
Tony Rhodes, Project Engineer at Sotech:
“This was a particularly challenging project and was a pleasure to work in collaboration with both the Keyclad Team and JMA Facades during the design process. Once the initial design concept was approved by the Architect/Client, the route through final system design and manufacture to site installation went very smoothly to produce some striking features to the building.”
Joshua Stevens, Estimator at Sotech:
“The complexity of the beacons presented a unique challenge for both our team and the installers. Thanks to Tony Rhodes’ collaboration with Keyclad and their design team, we found a practical solution that stayed true to the architect’s vision. The final outcome looks fantastic!”
The completed Art and Design Building stands as a testament to cutting-edge design and expert manufacturing. The combination of deep green with the shimmering UA Regency Gold 2 aluminium panels creates a captivating contrast, making the structure a standout feature Nottingham. The façade’s intricate detailing and angular beacon forms lend the building a strong visual identity, reflective of an art and design school.
