WHAT IS AN ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT DECLARATION (EPD)

SOTECH IS PROUD TO CONTINUE IN BEING AN INDUSTRY LEADER, KEEPING UP WITH OUR SUSTAINABILITY COMMITMENT.

An EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is a document that follows the lifecycle of a product and it's environmental impact. From cradle to grave - although we have cradle to gate, it communicates the environmental impact or performance it has over its lifetime. Verified by a third party and valid for 5 years, the EPD is compliant to ISO 14025 and EN15804+A2:2019.

EPD's are a requirement in green public procurement using building assessment schemes such as LEED, GreenStar & BREEAM. The EPD allows for Sotech to be transparent, meaning informed decisions can be made when it comes to sustainable resources and carbon neutral design. The EPD is based around LCA methodology and practice, producing a shorter version of the LCA report without any sensitive product information being included.

The EPD consists of:

  • General Information - The name of the product, verification confirmation and validation date
  • Product Information - The summary of the performance and characteristics of the product
  • Information about the methodology used for LCA - Covering LCA calculations in functional units e.g. M2
  • LCA Results - Provided in a table format, showcasing the impact of each stage
  • Analysis - A summary report of the findings, outlining any major impacts

WHAT IS A LCA?

THE EPD ACTS AS A DIGESTABLE, COMMERICAL FORMAT FOR THE LONGER AND MORE DETAILED LCA.

A LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) measures the impact on the environment from every stage of a product's life cycle, including:

  • Raw Material Extraction
  • Material Processing
  • Manufacture
  • Distribution
  • Installation
  • End of Life

The LCA allows for any life cycle of a product to be evaluated for it's environmental impact, meaning improvements to product development, marketing and strategic planning can be implemented. The main phases of the Life Cycle Assessment include:

  • Goal and Scope Definition
  • Inventory Analysis
  • Impact Assessment
  • Interpretation
